Comparing Cruise Line Private Islands in the Caribbean!

The Caribbean is home to some of the most stunning private islands, and beach clubs each offering a unique escape tailored to cruise travelers. From pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters to thrilling activities and exclusive amenities, these private destinations are designed to elevate your vacation experience. In this blog, we’ll dive into a comparison of the top cruise line private islands, and a few beach clubs owned by these cruise lines, exploring what makes each one special and helping you decide which tropical retreat best suits your travel style. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a mix of both, there’s a perfect island waiting for you!

Most major cruise lines have private islands or private beach clubs in the Caribbean. If they don't they have access to them due to their affiliate partners. Having a private beach destination is a great experience. No worries about taking a taxi to get to the beach from a cruise ship, you feel safer if you are the type of person who feels uncomfortable being in a foreign country. Pristine white sand beaches are just steps away from the cruise ship. You will have some local flavors but very few locals honestly, which can be disappointing for some. But you will have an unforgettable experience.

Stormy day at Coco Cay, but at least the water is still pretty
A stormy day at Coco Cay but at lease the water was still pretty

Cruise Line Private Islands-

Perfect Day at CocoCay: (Royal Caribbean)

Visited by Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruise Line, located right beside NCL's Great Stirrup Cay

  • Overview: A resort-like private island in the Bahamas, designed for a mix of adventure and relaxation. It has been considered one of the best private islands.

  • Key Features:

    • Thrill Waterpark: Includes the tallest waterslide in North America, wave pools, and other adrenaline-pumping water slides (extra cost).

    • Oasis Lagoon: The largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean with a swim-up bar.

    • Chill Island: A serene beach area for relaxation.

    • Coco Beach Club: Offers overwater cabanas, an infinity pool, and upscale dining (extra cost).

    • Activities: Zip-lining, helium balloon rides, snorkeling, and kayaking.

    • Dining: Complimentary food options are included, with premium dining available at an extra cost.

    • Accessibility: Easy access via a pier, no tendering required.

Comparison Highlights

  1. Adventure vs. Relaxation:

    • CocoCay is ideal for families and thrill-seekers with its waterpark and adventure activities. But the private island also has some tranquility and luxury, that feel less populated, with less hustle and bustle as other parts of the island.

  2. Amenities:

    • CocoCay offers a wide range of free and premium amenities, including multiple beaches, pools, and dining options, but fewer but high-quality dishes that would be found at a restaurant in a port or on the cruise ship. Think of it as beach/ lunch food experiences.

    • There are a few vendors at the entrance to get souvenirs, but not many.

  3. Cost:

    • CocoCay has many free activities, as this visit is included in the cost of your cruise, but premium experiences like the waterpark and Coco Beach Club come at an additional cost.  Also the Cabanas can be quite pricey.

  4. Crowds:

    • CocoCay can be bustling due to its popularity and size. There can be a couple cruise ships visiting this private island at once, so you should not think your cruise ship will be the only one here. This will add to the crowd, but CocoCay is big enough to handle 2 cruise ships, even if one of them is the larger/ newer ones from Royal Caribbean's fleet.

CocoCay is perfect for those seeking a mix of adventure and relaxation. There is a pier which is nice for ships to dock which makes it less common to have to cancel this port due to ocean waves. But cancellations can happen, I witnessed it myself of a rainy windy day in February 2024. The Royal Caribbean ship could not dock at the pier safely so the port was skipped. (NCL's neighboring Great Stirrup Cay was canceled too that same day). I was able to visit the island in June on the Celebrity Reflection while a Large Royal Caribbean ship was docked. The Royal Caribbean ship offloaded one hour before we did, but they left 2 hours before we had to, which was nice. It was crowded in my opinion, but there were places to find lounge chairs on the beaches furthest away from the cruise ship dock. I would definitely visit again.

Great Stirrup Cay
Great Stirrup Cay

Great Stirrup Cay: Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL)

This private island is going through a serious, much needed upgrade to compete with other cruise line private islands in the area. Including the building of a pier.

  • Overview: A 270-acre private island in the Bahamas, offering a mix of relaxation and adventure with upcoming enhancements in 2025-2026.

  • Key Features:

    • Beaches and Pools:

      • Multiple beaches, including Bertram’s Cove, Cabana Beach, and Fiesta Beach.

      • The upcoming Great Life Lagoon: A 28,000-square-foot heated pool with swim-up bars, water features, and a splash zone.

    • Waterpark:

      • Great Tides Waterpark (opening 2026): Includes 19 slides, an 800-foot lazy river, cliff jumps, and a family slide for up to four guests.

    • Luxury Amenities:

      • Silver Cove: Exclusive villas with private beach access, Mandara Spa, and a Moët & Chandon Bar.

      • Vibe Shore Club: Adults-only retreat with premium loungers and bar service (opening 2026).

    • Dining and Drinks:

      • Complimentary dining at Jumbey Beach Grill, Abaco Taco, and more.

      • Bars like Bacardi Bar and Patron Bar, with the More At Sea™ beverage package applicable on the island.

    • Activities:

      • Snorkeling, kayaking, jet karts, zip-lining, and swimming with pigs.

      • Horizon Park for lawn games and Hammock Bay for relaxation.

    • Accessibility:

      • Tender port (no pier yet), with a tram service for easy navigation.

Unique Aspects of Great Stirrup Cay

  • Silver Cove: A standout feature offering private villas, spa access, and exclusive dining.

  • Upcoming Enhancements: The Great Tides Waterpark and Great Life Lagoon will elevate the island’s appeal for families and thrill-seekers.

  • Relaxation: Hammock Bay and Vibe Shore Club cater to those seeking a serene escape.

Great Stirrup Cay is ideal for cruisers looking for a balance of relaxation, family fun, and adventure in a more intimate setting. Right now since there is not a pier you will have to use tender boats to reach the island. This is less than ideal, as high waves or less than favorable weather, including wind can prevent visits. In fact NCL misses this port almost 50% of the time. Having a pier will help, but there will always be a 15% chance of missing the port which is the going rate for cruise ports being missed world wide. I have visited the island and loved my time here on my first NCL cruise, but on my latest NCL cruise it had to be canceled back in February 2024. I would visit again, and am especially looking forward to it after the renovations are done.

Royal Beach Club Paradise Island: (Royal Caribbean) Opening December 2025

  • Overview: A 17-acre all-inclusive beach club on Paradise Island, Nassau, Bahamas, offering a mix of family-friendly, chill, and party experiences.

  • Key Features:

    • Beaches and Pools:

      • Two pristine beaches: Family Beach and Chill Beach.

      • Three pools, including The Deep End for relaxation and Party Cove with the world’s largest swim-up bar.

    • Dining and Drinks:

      • Unlimited Open Bar & Dining Day Pass includes access to 10 bars and three beach grills serving island-inspired cuisine.

      • Non-alcoholic day pass options are also available.

    • Entertainment and Activities:

      • Live music, DJ beats, and beach games like jumbo Jenga and cornhole.

      • Local artisan shops and cultural experiences.

    • Luxury Amenities:

      • Ultimate Family Cabana: A two-story retreat with a slide, whirlpool, frozen drink machine, and personal attendant.

      • Beach and poolside cabanas with upgraded amenities and dedicated service.

    • Accessibility:

      • Complimentary water transportation, Wi-Fi, loungers, umbrellas, towels, and lockers.

Unique Aspects of Royal Beach Club

This is treated as a shore excursion, as it is not a private island, and not included in the price of the cruise. It is an exclusive experience for Royal Caribbean guests who pay to visit, when the ship is docked in Nassau Bahamas.

When the cruise ship is stopping in the port of Nassau this will be treated as a shore excursion, with boats that will directly take you from the cruise ship to the Beach Club, that is very close by. In fact you can see part of it now being worked on from the cruise ships docked at the pier. This used to be the old Club Med resort, if you are familiar with the area.

Harvest Caye: Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL)

  • Overview: A 75-acre resort-style destination in Southern Belize, offering a mix of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and adventure. This port has a pier so you do not have to use tender boats. Also, one great factor is that only one ship can dock here at a time. Keeping the people count low is a positive thing for this smaller private island.

  • Key Features:

    • Beaches and Pools:

      • A seven-acre beach with complimentary loungers and umbrellas.

      • Expansive pool area with a swim-up bar, cascading waterfall, and private canopy cabanas.

    • Adventure Activities:

      • The Flighthouse: A 136-foot-high venue for zip-lining, quick jumps, and an observation deck.

      • Water activities in the saltwater lagoon for kayaking, paddleboarding, and electric float boats.

      • Excursions to the Belize Barrier Reef, the world’s second-largest reef.

    • Cultural and Natural Experiences:

      • Wildlife sanctuary with a butterfly garden, aviaries, and a reptile terrarium.

      • Local Belizean-owned restaurants, bars, and shops.

      • Excursions to the barrier reef, Mayan ruins, river tubing, parasailing or take a $25 ferry to Palencia where many ex pats live. This will give you more of a cultural experience than relaxing on a beach at Harvest Caye.

    • Luxury Amenities:

      • Beachside cabanas with concierge service, private bathrooms, and air conditioning.

      • Golf carts for easy transportation around the island.

    • Dining and Drinks:

      • LandShark Bar & Grill and other Belizean-owned dining options.

      • Bars serving tropical cocktails, with no drink packages applicable.

    • Accessibility:

      • Docking port (no tendering required), making it easy to access the island.

Unique Aspects of Harvest Caye

  • Eco-Tourism: Focuses on sustainability with a wildlife sanctuary, mangrove planting, and conservation efforts.

  • Cultural Immersion: Belizean-owned businesses and local staff provide an authentic experience.

  • Natural Beauty: Proximity to the Belize Barrier Reef and lush mangroves make it a standout for nature lovers.

Harvest Caye is ideal for cruisers seeking a blend of eco-tourism, cultural immersion, and adventure in a resort-style setting.

Half Moon Cay
Half Moon Cay

Half Moon Cay: (Carnival Cruise Line)

Carnival, Princess Cruises and Holland America line can and will use this as their private island at times, as they are affiliated with each other.

  • Overview: A 2,400-acre private island in the Bahamas, with only 50 acres developed for guests. It’s known for its pristine beaches and tranquil atmosphere.

  • Key Features:

    • Beaches and Relaxation:

      • Over a mile of white-sand beach with crystal-clear turquoise waters.

      • Complimentary beach chairs, but umbrellas are available for a fee.

    • Adventure Activities:

      • Horseback riding along the beach and into the water.

      • Snorkeling, kayaking, paddleboarding, and Aqua Trax watercraft adventures.

      • Stingray encounters and boat snorkeling excursions.

    • Family-Friendly Features:

      • Children’s water park and multiple playgrounds.

      • Beach games like volleyball and basketball.

    • Luxury Amenities:

      • Private cabanas and villas with air conditioning, private bathrooms, and concierge service.

      • Massage services available on the beach.

    • Dining and Drinks:

      • Complimentary buffet lunch with beachside classics.

      • Lobster Shack offers fresh seafood for an additional cost.

      • Bars serving tropical cocktails, but Carnival’s CHEERS! drink package is not applicable on the island.

    • Accessibility:

      • Tender port (no pier), requiring water taxis to access the island.

It has been years since I visited this island. I did enjoy it when I visited but I did feel it was crowded. I remember I did not like that the Cheers package did not work on the island. That was disappointing, but didn't stop me from having a good time.

Unique Aspects of Half Moon Cay

  • Natural Beauty: Known for its untouched beauty, with most of the island remaining undeveloped.

  • Tranquility: Ideal for those seeking a peaceful beach day without the crowds or resort-like atmosphere.

  • Family-Friendly: Offers activities for all ages, including a water park and playgrounds.

Half Moon Cay is perfect for cruisers looking for a serene and natural beach experience with a touch of adventure and family-friendly activities.

Celebration Key
Celebration Key

Celebration Key: (Carnival Cruise Line) opened July 2025

Celebration Key, Carnival Cruise Line's exclusive beach club on Grand Bahama Island, offers a unique experience compared to other cruise lines' private islands or beach clubs. Here's what to expect and how it stands out:

What to Expect at Celebration Key

  1. Diverse Zones ("Portals"):

    • Paradise Plaza: A welcoming area with live music, photo ops, and the iconic Suncastle featuring waterslides and observation decks.

    • Starfish Lagoon: Family-friendly with splash pads, sports courts, and the largest freshwater lagoon in the Caribbean.

    • Calypso Lagoon: Adult-oriented with swim-up bars, a DJ island, and cabanas.

    • Pearl Cove Beach Club: Adults-only luxury with an infinity pool, private beach, and elevated dining options.

    • Lokono Cove: A cultural hub showcasing Bahamian art, crafts, and local shopping.

  2. Activities and Amenities:

    • Two massive freshwater lagoons for swimming and lounging.

    • Waterslides, sports courts, and family-friendly splash zones.

    • Adults-only areas with exclusive bars and dining.

    • Shore excursions like kayaking, snorkeling, and cultural tours.

  3. Dining and Drinks:

    • Over 30 dining and bar options, including food trucks, snack shacks, and upscale restaurants.

    • Guests receive a dining credit for one meal, with additional food and drinks available à la carte.

  4. Local Connection:

    • Staffed by Bahamian locals, with food and crafts sourced from the region.

    • Junkanoo parades and live Bahamian music enhance the cultural experience.

  5. Accessibility and Sustainability:

    • ADA-friendly with trams and wide walkways.

    • Eco-conscious practices like waste management and coral reef protection.

Unique Aspects Compared to Other Cruise Lines

  • Focus on Freshwater Lagoons: Unlike Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay, which emphasizes thrill attractions like waterparks, Celebration Key highlights its expansive lagoons for relaxation and family fun.

  • Cultural Integration: Lokono Cove and local staffing provide a deeper connection to Bahamian culture, setting it apart from more commercialized private islands.

  • Dining Model: The dining credit system is unique, offering flexibility but requiring additional purchases for more meals.

  • Adults-Only Luxury: Pearl Cove Beach Club offers a more exclusive and upscale adults-only experience compared to similar areas on other islands.

Celebration Key blends relaxation, family fun, and cultural immersion, making it a standout destination for Carnival cruisers. Its location is a good bit away from Freeport's other port on Grand Bahama Island, but one thing I love about this location is its proximity to my favorite beach on Grand Bahamas Island. Gold Beach, and the park/ cave area that is nearby. On my next visit I might try to spend a little time there and some time here at Celebration Key.

One thing that should be noted, the beaches are more open water beaches instead of coves, meaning you could face stronger waves, rip currents and other things that are common at most beaches. This is because this is a large island and there are no small islands nearby breaking up the currents or protecting the beaches. Coco Cay and Great Stirrup Cay are surrounded by many little islands that help to make the waves and currents less strong.

Castaway Cay
Castaway Cay

Castaway Cay: (Disney Cruise Line)

Disney's Castaway Cay is a standout private island experience, offering a blend of Disney magic and tropical relaxation. Here's how it compares to other cruise line private islands:

Unique Features of Castaway Cay

  1. Themed Experience:

    • Castaway Cay is designed as a whimsical shipwrecked paradise, complete with Disney character meet-and-greets, rustic props, and a family-friendly atmosphere.

    • The island's layout includes distinct zones: family beaches, kids' play areas, and the adults-only Serenity Bay.

  2. Activities:

    • Water-based fun includes snorkeling with sunken treasures, Pelican Plunge waterslides, and a 5K running trail.

    • Land activities feature bike rentals, volleyball, and shaded game pavilions.

  3. Accessibility:

    • The island is easy to navigate with paved paths and a tram system, making it convenient for families and those with mobility needs.

  4. Dining:

    • Complimentary barbecue buffets are available, with options like ribs, burgers, and grilled rib-eye steaks at Serenity Bay.

  5. Exclusivity:

    • Castaway Cay is a true private island, owned outright by Disney and accessible only to Disney Cruise Line guests.

Why Choose Castaway Cay?

  • Disney Magic: The island's immersive theme and character interactions make it a dream destination for Disney fans.

  • Family-Friendly: With dedicated areas for kids, teens, and adults, it caters to all age groups.

  • Convenience: The island's compact layout and efficient tram system ensure a stress-free experience.

Castaway Cay offers a unique blend of Disney charm and tropical relaxation, making it a top choice for families and Disney enthusiasts.

Ocean Cay Marine Reserve: (MSC Cruise Line)

Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, MSC Cruises' private island in the Bahamas, offers a unique blend of relaxation, eco-conscious design, and cultural immersion. Here's how it compares to other cruise line private islands:

Unique Features of Ocean Cay

  1. Eco-Focused Design:

    • Originally an industrial site, Ocean Cay was transformed into a marine reserve with a focus on sustainability and conservation.

    • Guests are encouraged to use reef-safe sunscreen, and the island supports marine life preservation.

  2. Beaches and Activities:

    • Eight beaches, including calm lagoon-facing options and ocean-facing ones with waves.

    • Activities include snorkeling, paddleboarding, kayaking, and wave runner excursions. A lighthouse climb and stargazing sessions add unique experiences.

  3. Dining and Drinks:

    • Complimentary buffet options at Seakers Food Court and food trucks with a mix of local and international dishes.

    • Drink packages from the ship apply on the island, making it convenient for guests.

  4. Accessibility and Amenities:

    • A pier allows direct access without tendering, and a tram system makes navigation easy.

    • Wheelchairs designed for sand are available, and Wi-Fi from the ship extends to the island.

  5. Nighttime Experience:

    • Evening activities include a Junkanoo parade, beach parties, and a lighthouse light show.

  6. Yacht Club Perks:

    • Exclusive access to a private beach area with cabanas, upscale dining, and personalized service.

Why Choose Ocean Cay?

  • Eco-Conscious Travelers: Ideal for those who value sustainability and marine conservation.

  • Relaxation Seekers: Offers a tranquil escape with less emphasis on high-energy attractions.

  • Convenience: Drink packages and Wi-Fi from the ship work seamlessly on the island.

Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve provides a serene and eco-friendly alternative to the more commercialized private islands, making it a perfect choice for relaxation and nature lovers. I have not visited this island yet, but plan on going soon.

Princess Cay
Princess Cays

Princess Cays: (Princess Cruise Line)

Princess Cays, Princess Cruise Line's private beach resort on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas, offers a more natural and laid-back experience compared to other cruise line private islands. Here's how it stands out and compares:

Unique Features of Princess Cays

  1. Natural Setting:

    • Located on the southern tip of Eleuthera, Princess Cays spans over 40 acres with half a mile of white-sand shoreline.

    • The resort maintains a more natural and less commercialized vibe compared to other private islands.

  2. Activities and Amenities:

    • Offers a range of water sports, including snorkeling, paddle wheelers, and glass-bottom boat tours.

    • Land activities include volleyball, basketball, and shopping at local craft shops.

    • Complimentary sunbeds are available, with umbrellas and clamshells for rent.

  3. Dining and Drinks:

    • A complimentary light lunch is served, but the dining window is limited to 90 minutes.

    • Bar facilities are open for a short duration, typically around three hours.

  4. Accessibility:

    • Requires tendering (water shuttles) to access the island, which can lead to delays and long queues.

    • The tender journey takes approximately 25 minutes, making it less convenient than islands with direct docking.

  5. Shade and Comfort:

    • Limited natural shade; umbrellas and clamshell rentals are recommended for sun protection.

    • Beach shoes are advised due to rocky areas in the water.

Why Choose Princess Cays?

  • Natural and Relaxed Atmosphere: Ideal for those seeking a quieter, less commercialized beach day.

  • Affordable Option: Appeals to budget-conscious travelers who prioritize simplicity over luxury.

  • Local Craft Shopping: Offers a chance to support local artisans and purchase unique souvenirs.

While Princess Cays may lack the extensive attractions and convenience of direct docking found on other private islands, its natural charm and relaxed vibe make it a unique destination for those looking to unwind in a serene setting. If you are looking for adventure, this is not the island for you. Sure, there are fun water activities, but no water slides, or zip lines.

Labadee, Haiti: (Royal Caribbean) Not in use at the moment

I would not count on this port area to be open anytime soon. All cruises through 2025 have canceled this port and changed itineraries due to unrest in Haiti. Crime is high on the island and Haiti has been given a level 4 warning from the US State Department, a Do Not Travel warning. But if it does open back up here is what to expect.

  • Overview: Labadee is a private peninsula on Haiti’s northern coast, exclusively accessible to Royal Caribbean guests. It offers a mix of adventure, relaxation, and cultural immersion. This is more of a beach club then a Private Island.

  • Key Features:

    • Barefoot Beach Club: An exclusive area for suite guests and Pinnacle-level members. It offers:

      • Private cabanas with butler service.

      • Upgraded buffet with gourmet food options.

      • A tranquil and luxurious beach experience.

    • Adventure Activities:

      • Dragon’s Breath Zip Lines: The world’s longest overwater zip line.

      • Dragon’s Tail Coaster: An alpine coaster with stunning views.

      • Arawak Aqua Park: An inflatable water park in the ocean.

      • Jet skiing, parasailing, and snorkeling.

    • Beaches:

      • Five distinct beaches, including family-friendly Columbus Cove with shallow water and action-packed Adrenaline Beach.

      • Complimentary loungers and umbrellas.

    • Dining:

      • Complimentary buffet-style lunch with beachside classics.

      • Bars serving tropical cocktails, including the signature Labadoozie.

    • Cultural Experiences:

      • Le Village: A Haitian cultural area with local crafts, music, and food. You can pick up some souvenirs or get your hair braded

Unique Aspects of Labadee

  • Labadee stands out for its natural beauty, cultural experiences, and adventure activities that integrate with the landscape. It’s ideal for those seeking a mix of relaxation and adrenaline in a more intimate setting.
