Visiting Charlotte, NC, and unsure where to stay? Well, you're in for a treat! This vibrant city offers diverse neighborhoods, each with its own unique charm and attractions. Whether you're a leisure traveler, on a business trip, or just passing through, Charlotte has something for everyone. Let's explore the best areas and hotels in Charlotte, NC to help you find your perfect home away from home.


Living here in the Charlotte area, I am familiar with the areas, and attractions of the Queen City. Charlotte, North Carolina has grown tremendously over the years, including its suburbs, some of which are on the South Carolina side. Depending on what you are interested in doing during your visit, will help you narrow down which area or hotel to stay at.

Near the Airport

Convenient Stays for Frequent Flyers

Staying near Charlotte Douglas International Airport is ideal for travelers with early flights or short layovers. The proximity ensures you can get to and from the airport with ease, saving valuable time. These airports have free airport shuttle service, and some offer visitors extended parking. If you drive and stay at the hotel before your flight, you will be able to leave your car at the airport and just use the hotel shuttle to travel to and from the airport. This is a cost effective option as the parking at the airport is expensive, especially if using the new parking garages they built.

 With its comfortable clean rooms, private bathrooms, and great dining options, it's perfect for a quick stopover.

While you're close to the airport, don't miss out on local attractions:

  • Carolinas Aviation Museum-now known as the Sullenberger Aviation Museum where you can explore fascinating exhibits on flight history. Recently renovated and reopened under the new name. Named for the pilot who landed the plane in the Hudson River in New York, this plane is actually featured in the museum.

  • CLT overlook- watch the planes land at the airport at the new overlook area, recently opened and includes a playground for the kids and plenty of setting. It is really neat to sit and watch the planes land.

  • Billy Graham Library- located less than 2 miles away from the airport, this is the perfect place to learn about Reverend Billy Graham.

Uptown

Pulse of the City

Uptown Charlotte is the heart of the city, bustling with life and energy. It's where you'll find top dining spots, cultural experiences, and the business district, making it perfect for both tourists and professionals. This is actually the best neighborhood for first time visitors to the city.


This is the only city in the country where the downtown Charlotte area is actually called Uptown. Most hotels are a short walk from attractions. Most visitors to the Charlotte area stay here, and I agree if you are wanting to take in Charlotte as a visitor I would stay here too. It is the ideal location, close to the light rail and main bus station, which can take you anywhere in the city. Plus, all the uptown area restaurants and bars.

 Luxurious accommodations, fine dining, and a rooftop pool await you here.

 Connected to the Overstreet Mall, this hotel offers convenience and style.

 With its chic design and stunning views, it's a must-stay for any visitor.

A luxury boutique hotel with Wednesday wine social where you can get free wine on Wednesday evening.


Must-See Attractions

Uptown is packed with attractions:

  • NASCAR Hall of Fame- See many cars, and learn about the history of Nascar, past champions and so much more.

  • Discovery Place Science Museum- A great place for kids to visit, but also as an adult is fun too. Once a month they have a special themed night thats adult only. I highly recommend visiting these, as they have alcoholic beverages.

  • Romare Bearden Park- the perfect place to walk around and get some fresh air. Perfect for people watching.

  • Spectrum Center- Take in a Charlotte Hornets Basketball Game or even a concert, there is always something going on at the Spectrum Center.

  • The Liberty Walk- a self guided walk of just a few blocks, where you can learn about the history of the city and its place in the Revolutionary War.

  • Old Settlers Cemetery- Charlotte's oldest graveyard with burials from the Revolutionary War and Civil War Buried there. Check out the Presbyterian Church next door, it is beautiful.

  • 7th Street Food Market- one of the best places to get coffee and food.

  • Truist Field- watch some baseball, or check out their website for other events.

Bank of America Stadium- located nearby for Carolina Panther football, and concerts.

North Davidson (NoDa)

NoDa is Charlotte's arts and entertainment district. This area is known for its vibrant street art, eclectic galleries, bars and live music venues. It's a haven for creative souls and those seeking a lively atmosphere. This is not my favorite neighborhood to Stay in, so I would suggest staying in Uptown. But here are a couple places I would recommend.


Cozy Places to stay in NoDa

 For a more homey feel, this Airbnb option is perfect for a cozy stay.

Small little place in the area, perfect for the solo travelers out there.


Local Highlights

While in NoDa, don’t miss the Neighborhood Theatre for live performances, or stroll through galleries like The Evening Muse. And, of course, indulge in the local culinary delights at places like Haberdish and Mac's Speed Shop.


South Park

Upscale Living

South Park is Charlotte’s upscale neighborhood known for high-end shopping and fine dining. It's a great place for those who love luxury and a leisurely pace. The south end is a great place to stay.


Premier Hotels in South Park

 Elegant rooms and a beautiful garden make this a standout choice. Also has an indoor pool.

 With its sophisticated ambiance and excellent amenities, it's perfect for a luxurious stay.

 Provides spacious suites that are ideal for families or extended stays. They have a fitness center, but more importantly a great patio with an outdoor pool.


What to Do in South Park

SouthPark Mall is a shopper’s paradise featuring luxury brands. For outdoor enthusiasts, Symphony Park offers a great green space for relaxation. Don't forget to dine at some of the finest restaurants like Ruth’s Chris Steak House.

Thrill-Seekers' Paradise

Carowinds, a popular amusement park, straddles the North and South Carolina border. Staying nearby is ideal for families and thrill-seekers looking to maximize their time on roller coasters and water rides. So much family fun.


Staying in nearby Fort Mill SC is a great option for Carowinds visitors, as the amusement park is split on the border. Half is in Charlotte NC, and the other part is in Fort Mill SC. Carowinds is also located near the Interstate exchange of 485, making it 15 minutes from the Airport.



Family-Friendly Hotels Near Carowinds

 Offers spacious suites and a complimentary breakfast. Also an outdoor pool.

 Affordable, comfortable and free breakfast. This is a good choice, perfect for families.

 Features kitchenettes and space for the whole family, and of course free wifi.


Nearby Fun

Besides the endless fun at Carowinds, the nearby Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort offers a unique camping experience. Adventure enthusiasts can also explore the U.S. National Whitewater Center just off Interstate 485 It's not super close, but with its proximity to 485, you can get there quicker than driving interstate 77 North through Charlotte.


Top Golf, the Outlet Mall, and Lake Wylie are located nearby.

For dining, try Gallery Restaurant for a gourmet experience. AMP Ballantyne is a great place to visit for concerts or even Pilates. The area is continuing to grow with more and more opening up every year.


Plaza Midwood

Plaza Midwood is one of Charlotte’s most eclectic neighborhoods. Known for its funky vibe, diverse eateries, and vintage shops, it’s a favorite among young professionals and hipsters. This is one of the best neighborhoods, locals love it.

If you are looking to stay in this neighborhood, check out Airbnb and VRBO. If wanting a hotel, stay in the Uptown area.


Must-Visit Spots

While in Plaza Midwood, explore the vibrant Central Avenue bustling with cafes, bars, and shops. Visit the iconic Common Market for a laid-back atmosphere and the Thirsty Beaver Saloon for a true local experience.
