The sunset is a magnificent work of art created every evening by mother nature and no matter how many times you have seen a sunset, it is always worth watching because each one is different. Since I was born and raised in West Virginia, and living there for almost 30 years, I got to see my fair share of amazing sunsets. Some of the best in the world can happen in West Virginia due to all those majestic mountains, deep valleys and lakes. Here is a list of the most stunning sunsets (in no particular order). If you are looking for a magical experience, then you must visit at least one of these spots to experience the best sunsets in West Virginia.
Thanks to all of those that helped me with pictures. My pictures and visits were many years before I started my blog. The pictures I have are not digital and not near as good of quality, so thanks to all of you for allowing me to use your pictures. They are all quite beautiful.
Canaan Valley
Canaan Valley is one of the highest valleys in the eastern United States, and it is a popular spot for skiing and snowboarding. However, Canaan Valley Resort State Park also offers a stunning sunset view that you must not miss. Visit Bald Knob, and Table Rock for the best views from a high vantage point. While in the Canaan Valley area visit Spruce Island Lake near Timberland Ski Resort. It is a different type of sunset. Instead of viewing from a mountain top which we all know is gorgeous. try it from the lake. It is the best water view sunset. I have to say you can find many magical sunset opportunities in the Canaan Valley area, so come here and stay a several days to get several chances at a variety of different locations in this area.
Dolly Sods
Dolly Sods Wilderness Area is a vast high-altitude plateau located in the Allegheny Mountains of eastern West Virginia. The 17,371-acre Dolly Sods are part of the Monongahela National Forest which is part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. Located near Petersburg, West Virginia, Canaan Valley and Blackwater Falls. It is known for its unique landscape that resembles an alpine tundra, with rocky terrain and breathtaking views. You will think you are in Canada. Witnessing the sunset from Dolly Sods is an experience that will leave you speechless. The orange, red, and golden hues of the sunset will create a masterpiece that is unmatched. Rohrbaugh Cliffs (also the name of the trail) is one of the most beautiful places on earth. The Trail is 3.5 miles and starts in Grant County, just at the border of Randolph County. As you walk the trail you enter into the southern part of Tucker County. Also, Pendleton County is just a hop, skip, and jump away. Visit and like km_wvadventures for more info on hiking, trails, and pictures all over WV.
North Fork Mountain
North Fork Mountain is a remarkable location in the eastern United States and is located in Pendleton County. It is 4,000 feet high, which makes it high enough to experience sunsets that are unmatched by many other locations. This barrier mountain range offers an overlook known as Chimney Top that is the perfect sunset vantage point. The trailhead begins at Smoke Hole Road and goes along about eight miles, and it is surrounded by beautiful scenery that will take your breath away. The view from the Chimney rock truly is a majestic sight, showing off the stunningly painted sky and the mountains that disappear into the horizon. If you would like more info on North Fork Mountain (a hiker and mountain bikers paradise) check out Highland Outdoors. With many amazing peaks that include, Kile Knob, Panther Knob, Pike Knob and of course Chimney Top. you can find the sunset of your dreams here.
Coopers Rock State Forest
Coopers Rock State Forest is located in Monongalia and Preston counties, and just 13 miles from Morgantown West Virginia (Let's GO Mountaineers!!!!!). It is one of the most scenic spots in West Virginia and has several overlooks, but the best place to watch the sunset is from the Coopers Rock Overlook. The overlook provides a stunning view of the Cheat River Canyon, the Allegheny Mountains, and the most amazing sunset. The view is simply the best, and you won't want to leave. If you are near Morgantown this is a must-see place, with plenty of hiking, biking, picnic areas and so much more. Coopers Rock is the place to be.
Blackwater Falls State Park
Blackwater Falls State Park is known for its beautiful falls, but it also offers a stunning sunset view. The park is located in Tucker County, and near other amazing parks like Canaan Valley, and Dolly Sods. The view from the Pendleton Point Overlook is simply magical. The view provides a stunning view of the Blackwater River Gorge, and the colors of the sunset create an amazing contrast with the lush greenery of the park. The view in the picture is actually from Lindy Point which I feel is the best in the park.

If you are in the area long enough visit Babcock State Park. All 3 will give you opportunities to witness a great sunset.
Spruce Knob
Spruce Knob is the highest peak in the state of West Virginia, reaching an elevation of 4,861 feet. Although this is technically in the Seneca Rocks Recreational area, it deserves its own little spot in my blog. This unique location provides visitors with an exceptional vantage point to experience sunsets from above the clouds. Located on the rim of the mountain peak, Spruce Knob Observation Tower is the perfect place to catch stunning views of the sunset. The tower offers 360-degree panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. You can enjoy the breathtaking sunset with the added advantage of seeing the sky changing colors above the fog line.
Summersville Lake State Park
Summersville Lake State Park is a wonderful place for a visit. Located in Nicholas County, and just recently added as a state park on August 11th 2023, take advantage of what all this State Park has to offer from Boating, fishing, swimming to hiking, you can do it all. Plus, you could visit a lighthouse which is truly a sight to see since we are nowhere near the ocean. But today we are here for sunsets, and I am sure you will catch the best sunset view in the area here at Summersville Lake State Park. I remember years ago being on this lake in a pontoon boat and watched a beautiful sunset happen.
Pipestem State Park
Situated on the Bluestone River in the southern part of West Virginia, Pipestem State Park is a perfect place to witness the sunset while enjoying the view of the mountains. The park has over 26 miles of hiking trails (15 trails in fact), which will take you through the stunning views of the Appalachian Mountains. Be sure to climb the Shot Tower to witness a panoramic view of the sunset that will leave you awestruck. I am partial to Pipestem because it's the closest state park to where I grew up. I spent many summers here camping, visiting the pool, hiking and so much more. They have a tram, zip lines, and a beachfront area on the Bluestone River. They also have a spa, hotel, restaurants, and cabins to rent. Just remember with all that you can see and do here, you must not forget to take in a view of that beautiful sunset.

Last on the list, but not the least, is Seneca Rocks, a famous landmark located in Pendleton County, in the Monongahela National Forest. The rocks are a popular spot for hiking, and the view from the summit is just amazing. Seneca Rocks is famous for its rock-climbing attributes and is also another amazing location for sunset views. Seneca Rocks awe-inspiring site, with a sheer rock face that rises 900ft above the ground. The amber color of the sky casts a spell on you, mirroring the rocks' golden color towards their end.
