Mediterranean Cruises

Think Christmas markets are only for snow-covered cities or on the Seine or Rhine River? Think again! The Mediterranean offers its own twist on the festive season.

Mediterranean cruises with stops in Florence and Barcelona are sure to impress. Many major cruise lines offer cruises during this time of year. MSC is one of the most popular for Europe, but Cruise lines like Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruise Line and even Celebrity have late in the year cruises that will allow you to do some Christmas Market Exploring.

Rome may have tons of nativity scenes, Christmas trees and beautiful cobblestone streets, but they tend to lack the Christmas Market Charm of European cities. Still if visiting Rome be sure to look for Basilicas and other churches that will have great trees and nativity scenes, and also the large tree Rome puts up every year (either in the Trident area or at the Wedding Cake building...... I'm serious, look it up.)Now don't get me wrong, you will find 3 smaller markets in Rome if you are in the 2nd week of December till Christmas, and one of the best is in Piazza Navana, but they truly do not compare to other European cities' impressive Christmas markets.

My Own Experience on taking Mediterranean Cruise near Christmas

My Holiday cruise was on the Norwegian Gem a year ago, but it was not just a Mediterranean cruise, it was a transatlantic cruise, so it started in Rome Italy and ended in New York City. It was a great price and perfect for the holiday season, allowing me to be home a few days before Christmas eve. Here are my thoughts on my favorite stops along the way.

Christmas Market in front of Saint Croce in Florence
Christmas Market in front of Saint Croce

Florence

The Christmas Market in front of St. Croce in Florence, Italy, surpassed the few small Christmas markets I visited in Rome, Italy, during a cruise in early December. The cruise departed on December 4th from Rome, which I learned was early for the Rome Christmas Market. They typically reach full swing the following week. However, Florence was delightful on May 5th. The market featured hand-carved wooden ornaments, excellent gifts, and snacks. I even tried mulled wine in Florence for the first time. Since the market is just across the street from the St. Croce Basilica, be sure to visit. You'll see a stunning church with the tombs of Galileo and Michelangelo inside. There are also fantastic leather shops in the area if you're searching for a special Christmas gift. In fact, the leather-making school is just behind St. Croce.

Christmas Vendor near Sagrada Familia
Christmas Market Vendor near Sagrada Familia

Barcelona

Barcelona is renowned for the Sagrada Familia, a Unesco World Heritage Site, the most magnificent church in all of Europe. Next to the Basilica is a park with a charming Christmas market. You'll find all sorts of Christmas knick-knacks, from ornaments to nativity displays. I visited during the week on December 7th, and it was incredibly crowded. The entire area was bustling. During this time of year, many people from Spain visit the Sagrada Familia for the Christmas season, making it an ideal time for vendors to set up and sell their Christmas goods. I enjoyed observing the hustle and bustle of the people and did some browsing, but I preferred people-watching over shopping. Honestly, I couldn't focus on what I was looking at due to the sheer number of people. Although everyone was very polite, I was bumped into several times as the sidewalk couldn't accommodate all the Christmas Market shoppers at once.

Christmas Market in Aix
Christmas Market in Aix en Provence

Aix en Provence

My favorite Christmas market of the Mediterranean cruise was in Aix en Provence. We stopped in Marseille, France, on December 6th and then took a shore excursion bus ride to Aix en Provence. The city is charming and known for its colleges and as the birthplace of artist Paul Cezanne. The excursion showed us some Old Roman Ruins, and then we had a few hours to explore on our own, just a couple of blocks away from Cours Mirabeau Street. This pedestrian street features cafes, shops, and restaurants, but during this time of year, it hosts booths for Christmas market vendors. It was absolutely lovely.

Calissons candy in France
Calissons, Candy in France

I bought some roasted chestnuts, a Christmas favorite, and walked the street looking for Christmas gifts. One item I sought was a candy that this region is famous for: Calissons, an almond and fruit dessert candy. There are several vendors in the area selling them, but I bought mine from a vendor who had been making them for over 100 years. They were originally made in the mid-1400s for the King and Queen. In the 1600s, during a horrific plague in the South of France, the county assessor, desperate to save the city, prayed to the patron Saint of Aix en Provence to protect its people from the sickness, promising to give everyone a blessed Calisson to keep the plague away. Did this really work? Most likely not, but they were so relieved at the time that from then on, and still today, the archbishop gives these out on the first of September instead of communion wafers. I just had to buy a few boxes of these treats for Christmas gifts and one for myself too. At one end of the street, Christmas-themed rides were set up for the kids, making it the perfect place to do some people-watching while sipping coffee from a cafe after shopping.

United States Christmas Market Cruise

For something closer to home, American Christmas cruises offer festive stops in popular U.S. destinations, or the Caribbean islands that in the grand scheme of things are not that far away. You can enjoy charming holiday decorations and local holiday events almost anywhere in this little section of the world, but for cruise ship ports with great Christmas Markets only one comes to mind.

Rockerfeller Plaza Tree
Rockefeller Plaza Tree

New York City

During the magical holiday season, New York City transforms into a winter wonderland, making it one of the most enchanting places to experience Christmas. My favorite spot for soaking in the festive spirit is undoubtedly the dazzling array of Christmas lights and displays that illuminate the city, with the iconic Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center standing tall as a symbol of holiday cheer. This majestic tree, adorned with thousands of sparkling lights and topped with a stunning star, draws crowds from all over the world.

The atmosphere is electric as families, couples, and friends gather to admire the beauty of the season, often pausing to capture the moment with photographs against this breathtaking backdrop. One of the quintessential activities during this time is ice skating at the Rockefeller Center rink, where skaters glide gracefully beneath the towering tree, surrounded by the twinkling lights that create a truly magical ambiance. However, the delights of the city do not end there.

Another fantastic destination for holiday festivities is Bryant Park, which has become a beloved hub for both locals and tourists alike. This charming park features a delightful ice-skating rink that is free to enter, with skate rentals available for those who don’t have their own. The rink is often bustling with laughter and joy as people of all ages take to the ice, creating a sense of community and celebration. Surrounding the rink, vendors set up charming stalls that offer an array of seasonal treats and unique gifts. Here, you can find hot mulled wine that warms your hands and soul, freshly baked goods that fill the air with their mouthwatering aroma, and roasted chestnuts that evoke a sense of nostalgia.

The market atmosphere is vibrant, filled with the sounds of cheerful holiday music, laughter, and the chatter of visitors exploring the various stalls. While you’re in the area, it’s highly recommended to take a short stroll to the other side of the block to visit the New York Public Library. This architectural marvel, with its grand façade and stunning interiors, is truly amazing to see, especially when decorated for the holidays. The library offers a peaceful respite from the bustling streets, allowing visitors to appreciate its beauty and perhaps even enjoy a moment of quiet reflection.

Christmas Ornaments for sale in NYC

Another highlight of the holiday season in New York City is the Union Square Holiday Market, which is often regarded as the finest Christmas Market in the city. Opening in late November, this market becomes a festive haven where the aroma of gingerbread wafts through the air, enveloping visitors in a warm, inviting embrace. As you wander through the market, you’ll find a delightful assortment of handcrafted goods, artisanal foods, and unique gifts that make perfect holiday presents. The atmosphere can get quite lively, especially on weekends when crowds gather to enjoy the festive offerings. To fully experience the market’s charm, it’s best to visit in the early morning hours. During this time, you can watch the artisans at work, crafting their beautiful creations, while sipping on a steaming cup of hot apple cider to keep warm against the crisp winter air. The early morning light adds a magical glow to the market, enhancing the beauty of the decorations and the joy of the season.

Runner ups in the Christmas Markets would be Boston Massachusetts and San Juan Puerto Rico.

Buenos Aires

The Mataderos Fair Christmas Market, located in the vibrant neighborhood of Mataderos in Buenos Aires, Argentina, is celebrated as one of the largest and most traditional markets in the city. This festive market, which typically runs through the holiday season, attracts both locals and tourists alike, eager to immerse themselves in the rich cultural tapestry that Buenos Aires has to offer. As visitors approach the market, they are greeted by the lively sounds of folk music and the tantalizing aromas of traditional Argentine foods wafting through the air. The atmosphere is imbued with a sense of joy and community, as families gather to celebrate the holiday season. Stalls adorned with colorful decorations line the streets, showcasing a wide array of artisanal crafts, handmade gifts, and local delicacies that reflect the cultural heritage of Argentina. One of the standout features of the Mataderos Fair is its dedication to preserving traditional Argentine customs. Craftsmen and artisans display their work, offering everything from intricately designed leather goods to beautifully crafted pottery. Visitors can find unique souvenirs that capture the essence of Argentine culture, making the market a perfect place for holiday shopping. In addition to the crafts and goods, the market is also a culinary delight.

Food stalls serve up a variety of traditional dishes, including empanadas, choripán, and dulce de leche treats. The opportunity to savor these local flavors while enjoying the festive atmosphere enhances the overall experience, allowing visitors to connect with the culinary heritage of the region. Throughout the market, there are also performances that showcase traditional Argentine folk dances and music. These lively displays not only entertain but also educate attendees about the rich cultural history of Argentina. The vibrant colors of the dancers' costumes and the rhythmic sounds of the music create an enchanting backdrop that captures the spirit of the season. As the sun sets, the market transforms into a magical wonderland, illuminated by twinkling lights and festive decorations. The sense of community is palpable, as people come together to celebrate, share stories, and create memories.

The Mataderos Fair Christmas Market is more than just a shopping destination; it is a celebration of Argentine culture, community, and the joy of the holiday season. In conclusion, the Mataderos Fair Christmas Market stands out as a must-visit destination during the holiday season in Buenos Aires. What to Expect Onboard

A Christmas Market cruise is so much more than just the destinations! Here’s what you can look forward to while aboard the ship.  Many cruise ships will put up Christmas decorations and Christmas trees during the month of December for everyone to enjoy. My cruise, on the NCL Gem was no different. In fact in the Atrium was a beautiful tree lit up with Christmas lights and a train set display that was very neat. One day I took an origami making class at the Atrium Bar at 9 AM and we all placed the origami creations in the tree for people to see and take if they wanted them.

Festive Dining

Indulge in seasonal menus that feature gingerbread, roasted meats, and mulled wine. Many cruises, like AmaWaterways, go the extra mile to pair meals with local wines from the regions you visit.  This mainly will apply to river cruises. The NCL cruise I was on did basically the same foods as previous cruises.

Did you know that on Christmas day at breakfast some cruise lines (NCL and Carnival for sure) allow you to come to the dining room in your pajamas. I think that is a great tradition to do, since if you were at home, you would be in your pajamas eating breakfast or opening gifts.

Christmas Entertainment

Get into the holiday spirit with carolers, festive movies, and special shows. Many cruises also organize Christmas-themed onboard workshops, like ornament crafting or cookie decorating.

The crew is very involved in making gingerbread houses throughout the ship and set up displays in the atrium that are Christmas themed. You will see trees, and garland wrapped around the rails of the stairs, making it fell like Christmas

Relaxation in Style

Luxurious cabins, cozy lounges, and heated Jacuzzis mean you can unwind in comfort after a day of exploring festive cities.  Plus, most cruise ships have spas where you can get great massages or a hot stone massage.

Planning Your Christmas Market Cruise

Before you set sail, here are a few tips to make the most of your trip.

When to Book

  • Christmas Market cruises are incredibly popular, so book early to secure your spot. Aim for at least 6-8 months in advance to get the best deals and itineraries.  Utilize a travel agent when booking. They can help you out without charging anything extra. Christmas Market season is usually from the end of November till Christmas day, but each city could vary some. Double check the dates to make sure they match up to when you are taking your cruise.

  • Booking at the last minute with some cruise lines can be cheaper, but you are running the risk of the cruise line selling out, or not having the cabin you wanted. Limited availability is a common issue with cruises booked at the last minute. So if you know you are going to take this cruise, just book it, don't wait just to see if the price drops.

Packing Tips

  • Pack warm layers, including gloves, hats, and maybe a scarf as most markets are outdoors and temperatures can drop. Bring comfortable walking shoes for exploring market stalls. Don’t forget an extra tote bag for all those gifts and treasures you’ll be bringing home!

  • Always bring credit cards, as it is the easiest way to pay nowadays, but remember there could be some Christmas market booths that want cash. Sometimes using the ATMs in the cities are the easiest way to get cash, but they can charge you considerably in fees. Make sure you let your credit card companies and bank know that you are traveling out of the country for your trip.

Maximize Your Time

Research the markets and excursions offered at each stop. Some cruises, like Viking’s Rhine Getaway, provide guided tours to ensure you don’t miss any must-see spots.

Wrap Up Your Holidays in Style

A Christmas cruise is the perfect way to blend travel, culture, and the festive spirit. Whether you’re marveling at sparkling lights along Europe’s rivers, exploring Mediterranean markets, or enjoying festive dining on the ship, this is a holiday experience you’ll treasure forever.

If you're ready to make this year unforgettable, start planning your adventure today. The twinkling Christmas lights, and aromatic mulled wine are calling your name!
