History

The area that is now Lake City was originally settled by Native American tribes, including the Pee Dee and Catawba tribes. In the 1700s, European settlers began to arrive in the area and establish plantations. Many of these plantations relied on slave labor to grow crops like rice and indigo. If you take a drive on any road out from Lake City (or any part of the southern United States) you will see fields of cotton, all of which at some time or another were Plantations. During the American Revolution, the British occupied the area and used the local plantations as a base for their operations. The Battle of Lynches Creek, which took place in the area in 1780, was a major conflict between American and British forces.

During the Civil War, the area was a major center of Confederate activity. The town of Mars Bluff, located just outside Lake City, was the site of a Confederate ordnance factory that produced ammunition for the Confederate army. After the Civil War, the area struggled to recover from the devastation and economic impact of the war. Many former slaves moved to the area and established communities. In the early 1900s, the arrival of the railroad brought new economic opportunities to the area, including the establishment of a timber industry and the growth of agriculture. In 1935, the town of Lake City South Carolina was incorporated.
