The Best of Tazewell County Virginia: Outdoor Adventures
Tazewell County in southwest Virginia is an outdoor lover's paradise. The region boasts several spots to enjoy nature since it is in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, each with unique experiences to offer.
One thing I have thought interesting is the county itself supplies water to 2 different major river systems. The Eastern part of the county, at the top of the mountain is where the Bluestone River starts. This River winds through VA and WV growing in size till it meets the New River in Hinton WV. The Western part of the county is famous for the Clinch River, which flows west for 300 miles. Passing through Tazewell, Russel, and Wise County VA, then onto Tennessee. The Clinch River is known to have the largest number of freshwater animals in the United States. 29 Species of freshwater mussels and 19 species of fish. Perfect for any outdoor fishing enthusiast. Here are some of the must-visit outdoor destinations:
This picturesque lake is perfect for fishing, picnicking, or simply soaking in the serene mountain views. Cast your line and catch some prized trout while enjoying the peaceful surroundings.
Ideal for family outings, Lincolnshire Park features hiking trails, picnic areas, and a lake that’s a hotspot for fishing. Nature lovers can also spot a variety of local wildlife along the trails. Easy access to the lake with parking beside it. You do not need to park at the bottom and walk up.
For those seeking peace and quiet, Cavitt's Creek Park is a tranquil retreat. Camp by the lake, kayak through calm waters, or hike along scenic trails that showcase Tazewell County’s natural beauty.

Critterville Park and Kayak Launch nearby
Critterville Park is a favorite for families with kids. With its playgrounds and open spaces, it’s a charming spot for enjoying the fresh mountain air while the little ones run free. For one of the best outdoor recreation experiences, take a kayak out and enjoy the water.
Front Street Park Richlands
This little park is cute, but also where events happen during the Summer. They play movies here for the kids and sometimes have music performances at Front Street Park.
This 1.67-mile walk is perfect to visit, it connects to the downtown of Richlands and to a cool swing bridge.
Golfers, rejoice! Fincastle Country Club offers pristine greens and a challenging course surrounded by stunning Appalachian vistas. After your game, relax at their clubhouse and soak in the views. I was a worker at one of the golf tournaments here years ago, it is a beautiful course.
Local Attractions Rich in History and Culture
Tazewell County is steeped in history and brimming with cultural gems. Here are some fascinating sites to explore:
