Read on to uncover what makes this location a quintessential escape, perfect for combining relaxation, recreation, and adventure.

This is a review of the lake, the area and the cabin from a stay that happened in April of 2025. I had friends coming from Florida who wanted a place to stay for a long weekend to meet up with family and as a travel agent with Tourangie.com of course I could help them out. I live in the area, and love it, knowing many of the great places to see, places to eat, and more, I knew this would be the perfect place for them, if they wanted to stay "lake side" for a relaxing long weekend or explore the area for a more exciting weekend getaway.

Feel free to contribute to our collection when you discover interesting places and good restaurants.

Check in time is 4PM, and check out is 10AM, but the host can be flexible if given advance notice and if there is not a booking coming in later that day. If you are checking out on Sunday or Monday morning, roll the garbage can out to the end of the driveway, trash pick up happens very early on Monday morning, so roll it to the curb Sunday night. If you are checking on Monday afternoon and the Trash bin is still sitting by the curb, just roll it back to the cabin.

The cabin is on a slight hill where you will have a short walk to the lake, boat dock, and private beach. If you are out of shape like me, you will feel it when walking back up the hill, but not a serious hard walk. If you’re feeling adventurous and like water activities, step outdoors to take advantage of the private dock, ideal for fishing, launching kayaks, or simply lounging while soaking up the sights. Plus you can even rent a pontoon boat from the owners if you like. There is a small private beach with a clean beach, but will be shared with the 3 neighboring houses, but at least it is private property not everyone can visit this little beach area. Those 3 other houses have access to the water toys too. There is a rack on the beach with the water equipment located on them. If you would like to use one later, just remove it from the rack and place it in your yard, that will let everyone know you are planning to use it.

Pet-Friendly and Family-Approved

No family member is left behind here, and that includes your pets! The cabin welcomes well-behaved pets, so your furry companions can join in the fun. There are not any fences in the area, and you are required to keep the fur babies on a leash when outside but still give your pets a vacation with you is priceless. Neighbors in the past have complained about dogs running free in their yards, that's why it is a must to keep the pups leashed while outside here.  Dog weight limits do apply (50 pounds per dog) and only 2 dogs allowed.

With its spacious setup and amenities catering to both young kids, grown-ups and pups, this cabin makes an excellent choice for family reunions, long-term stays, or multigenerational holidays. A stackable washer and dryer ensures you can pack light for those extended getaways.

Whether it's curling up beside a firepit under the stars or making breakfast as a family, this cabin is designed to make you feel right at home while still connecting you to the beauty of the outdoors.

Things not to do:

  • Do not park or let any guests park on the main road,

  • No parties with more than 16 people. This is a private neighborhood with permanent residents living nearby.

Location

The funny thing is, I only think of Lake Wylie as a South Carolina lake, but it is close to North Carolina. What I realized when booking this, it is actually on the North Carolina side, the Steele Creek area in Mecklenburg County to be exact. It literally takes you less than 5 minutes to be back on the SC side.

The Review and Booking

This place, "A True Lake Experience with amazing views and sunsets" which is the name on VRBO and Expedia, was loved by the guests I booked there and I was able to take a peak during the stay, If they come back to the area they would book it again in a heartbeat. It is a convenient location, and the best price for a place on the lake. My friends had a great experience and loved the convenient access to the lake. The cottage had ample space in the yard, and did not feel too close to the other cottage rentals that share the beach/ lake area. They had a great time and so did their dog, which was exactly what my friends were looking for, a place that was pet friendly. They did not want to kennel their dog. I agree I would prefer not to kennel my dogs either.

As a travel agent, I would love for you to book with me. I will earn the commission instead of VRBO or Expedia keeping the commission that is already included in the price. You will not be charged anything extra by booking with me. I always feel booking with a travel agent is best, help the small businesses out, instead of relying on the large businesses who already get rich due to their websites online. Visit me at Tourangie.com and I can help you out.

I have seen the price be as low as $180 per night, which is great. You will not find a cabin at that price point, with direct access to the lake on any booking website. Some might say it is a small cabin to be able to fit 8 people, but I think it is the perfect size at 1,100 sq ft.

If you book with me or Expedia, you will get a full refund if the booking is canceled 2,5 weeks before your vacation. After that you will get 50% of your booking refunded back to you as long as you cancel 7 days before your trip.

Lake Wylie in All Its Glory

Nature’s playground, water lover’s haven and a popular choice—Lake Wylie is an absolute gem and one of South Carolina’s most treasured spots. Spanning over 13,000 acres with more than 325 miles of shoreline, public beaches, and the lake offers countless adventures and striking landscapes that will leave you in awe.

The lake itself is generally safe for swimming with low E Coli levels. This goes for all the Catawba Lakes in the region like Rock Hill Lake Park, Ebenezer Park, and Windjammer Park. Testing happens often to check for the safety of the lake for people enjoying the lake activities.

There should not be any alligators in the lake, but 1 was captured here in recent years. Gators are on the move from the coastal areas of SC and NC, moving inward, but usually gators that are found this far inland have been captured by people on the coast and wanted them as a pets, then released in lakes in the area either by not being being able to take care of them any more due to their size, or by pure stupidity.

Scenic Beauty That Mesmerizes

Framed by rolling hills and lush, green forests, Lake Wylie is undeniably photogenic. Its turquoise waters shimmer under clear sunny skies, making it perfect for sightseeing. From sunrise to sunset, you’ll see nature’s palette transform, with golden hues and fiery oranges painting the lake in the early mornings and evenings.

Recreational Activities Abound

Whether you’re a thrill seeker or someone who enjoys a slower pace, Lake Wylie won’t disappoint. Fishing enthusiasts can cast off for some bass, catfish, and perch. Eating fish caught from the lake is generally safe with low levels of mercury being reported. Not into fishing? Rent a pontoon boat or bring your paddleboard for an adventure out on the water. For on-shore activities, nearby trails offer opportunities for hiking, biking, and bird-watching.   You have plenty of outdoor activities on Lake Wylie with several public boat launches in Tega Cay and surrounding areas.

For families, the lake’s friendly swimming spots are a perfect way to cool off during warmer months. And if you’re visiting during the holidays, look out for the festive boat parades that light up the water!  There are parks surrounding the lake in different sections that offer nature trails for hiking, and lots of options for other recreational activities.

The Lake’s Story

Established in 1904, Lake Wylie is one of the oldest reservoirs in the U.S., initially developed for hydroelectric power generation. Today, it serves not only as a power source but as a centerpiece for recreation and regional pride. Its location, bordering both North Carolina and South Carolina, makes it accessible to various communities while providing a shared connection to its natural beauty.

Nearby Attractions That Spark Adventure

You won’t have to venture far from the cabin to find excitement and entertainment. It is in close proximity to some must-visit attractions near Lake Wylie that cater to diverse interests.

Roller coaster at Carowinds
Rollercoaster at Carowinds

Located just 20 minutes from Lake Wylie, Carowinds is a thrill-seekers paradise. Known as the "Thrill Capital of the Southeast," this amusement park spans state lines and offers a mix of heart-stopping roller coasters, family-friendly rides, and splash-filled water attractions. From the high-speed Fury 325 to more scenic carousel rides, there’s fun for every age group.

2. Fort Mill

Rich in history and Southern charm, Fort Mill is only a short drive away. Stroll through its quaint downtown, filled with boutiques, artisan shops, and delightful cafés. For those interested in local history, stop by the Fort Mill History Museum or visit Anne Springs Close Greenway for hiking trails, horseback riding, and educational programs in a stunning natural setting.

3. Rock Hill

Known as the largest city in York County, Rock Hill boasts its own array of attractions. Family-friendly venues like the Children’s Museum of York County are great for hands-on learning. Love sports? The area is home to incredible recreational facilities, including soccer fields and a BMX Supercross Track.

4. Charlotte Premium Outlets

Shopaholics, rejoice! A quick drive to the Charlotte Premium Outlets opens up a world of brand-name bargains. With retailers ranging from Coach to Nike, these outlets are a great place to snag deals while enjoying an outdoor shopping environment infused with modern, sleek design.

Check out the gardens, dog park, Trailhead store and  my favorite the Butterfly Bungalow. They even have a Scarecrow Hollow in the Fall. This attraction is located only about 15 minutes away.

Located 40 minutes away near the Catawba River is the Whitewater center. This would be a great experience that offers more than whitewater rafting in the man made rapids. Zipline, hiking and walking trails, a rope course, and so much more. I highly recommend checking this place out.

7. Catawba Two Kings Casino and State Parks

Take the back way for a fun drive, or hop on interstate 485 then 85 south to Kings Mountains NC for the casino. Although they are still working on building the full resort a casino area is operating and paying out huge wins.  If hiking and nature is more your thing visit Kings Mountain State Park, Kings Mountain Military Park, and Crowders Mountain. This is all located about 40 minutes away.

Savor Local Flavors

No trip is complete without indulging in good food, and the Lake Wylie area offers plenty to satisfy your taste buds.

This waterfront eatery is a top choice for fresh seafood and Southern-style comfort classics. Regulars rave about their shrimp and grits, while the expansive deck provides stunning lake views.

Located close by and less expensive than the other local restaurants that are located on the lake. It is actually in Lake Wylie City Limits. I loved the burger I ate when visiting.

Located in Rock Hill SC, but on the Catawba River, for a more upscale dining experience, head to The Pump House in Rock Hill. This restaurant delivers creative takes on steak, seafood, and regional favorites. Make sure to grab a spot on their rooftop deck!

Love barbecue? This spot in Fort Mill serves up smoky perfection in the form of juicy brisket, ribs, and pulled pork. Pair it with rich sides like baked beans and cornbread for a hearty meal.  For diners seeking variety, you’ll also find numerous cozy diners, quirky cafés, and international restaurants peppered throughout the area.

Easy Connections to the Action

Lake Wylie’s location makes it ideal for travelers flying in or exploring the broader region. Here’s a breakdown of key distances for smooth trip planning.

  • Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT): Approximately 30 minutes by car, providing easy access for national and international travelers.

  • Charlotte, NC: Just a 25-minute drive if you want to experience the energy of a bustling city, complete with arts, culture, and nightlife. Uptown Charlotte is more like 35 minutes due to traffic.

Plan Your Perfect Escape

With the natural beauty of Lake Wylie at your doorstep, a feature-packed cabin to call home, and nearby attractions offering endless activities, your next vacation is set to be one for the books. Whether it’s fishing at sunrise, enjoying a family cookout on the deck, or spending the day at a theme park, this location makes it easy to relax and recharge your soul.  There are many vacation rentals in the area, but for me "A True Lake Experience with amazing views and sunsets" is where I will direct all my customers to stay when visiting.

Pack your bags, soak in the lake vibes, and create memories that will last a lifetime, on a Lake Wylie Vacation—the shores of Lake Wylie are waiting for you.

Ooh, look at that big hammock. I could get a lot of reading done in that thing, then maybe a walk down to the lake. The place looks really good, especially like that there's plenty to keep people occupied including the games and canoes/kayaks to enjoy the Lake
