North Carolina’s coastline is a goldmine for shark tooth enthusiasts, and here’s why. Millions of years ago, much of the state was submerged under an ancient ocean teeming with marine life. As ocean levels changed, the remains of these creatures—including sharks’ teeth—settled into layers of sand and sediment.  

Now, thanks to constant coastal erosion, beach nourishment projects, and tidal movements, these hidden treasures are conveniently brought up for us to find. The geological history of the region, combined with the state’s long and varied coastline, makes it prime territory for finding shark teeth ranging from small bull sharks to the mighty megalodon.  

Fun Fact: Did you know the largest megalodon tooth in North Carolina was found near the Cape Fear River? Measuring over 6 inches, this colossal tooth is proof of the prehistoric giants that once roamed these waters!

The Best Beaches in North Carolina to Find Shark Teeth  

Not all beaches are created equal when it comes to discovering shark teeth. To save you time and effort, here’s a list of the top beaches in North Carolina where you’re bound to strike fossil gold.  

1. Caswell Beach  

Nestled on the eastern tip of Oak Island, Caswell Beach is a quiet, family-friendly destination. Its gentle waves and wide shoreline make it a fantastic spot for scouring the sand for shark teeth. Go early in the morning or after high tide for the best chances of making a find.  

2. Holden Beach  

Holden Beach is a shark tooth hunter’s paradise, and here’s why. A couple of years ago, the city underwent a massive beach nourishment project, restoring sand and vegetation. During this process, tons of sand (and fossil treasures) were brought to the surface. It’s worth noting that North Carolina and FEMA have approved $15 million for another renourishment project in 2025, adding approximately 555,000 cubic feet of sand to the area. If you’re there during or after the work, your chances of finding shark teeth skyrocket!  Al due to the nearby dredging of sand from the bottom of the ocean.

3. Oak Island  

Oak Island is well-known among fossil hunters for its abundance of shark teeth, seashells, and other marine treasures. The island’s shifting tides often reveal teeth of various shapes and sizes along its sandy coastline. Explore different access points for the best odds of a great haul.  

4. Topsail Island  

Topsail Island, particularly North Topsail Beach, is another great spot for shark tooth enthusiasts. Known for its stunning scenery and laid-back vibe, this beach attracts visitors who enjoy hunting for prehistoric relics washed ashore by the currents. Bring a sifter to make your search more efficient!  

5. Calabash  

This charming town near the South Carolina border boasts quiet, hidden beaches where you can spend hours combing the sand for shark teeth. The serene atmosphere and fewer crowds make it an ideal spot for focused fossil hunting. This is a great place to visit.

6. Shark's Tooth Island (x2!)  

Yep, you read that right. North Carolina is home to two Shark Tooth Islands!  Both of these can be the best bet to find many sharks teeth

• Nature Preserve near Wilmington: Accessible by kayak or boat, this secluded gem is perfect for finding an impressive variety of shark teeth and fossils.

• Emerald Isle Tourist Attraction: Popular among beachgoers, this spot offers plenty of shark teeth to discover and a great family-friendly vibe.

Can You Find Sharks Teeth in North Carolina Rivers?  

Absolutely! Rivers in North Carolina, especially the Cape Fear River, are excellent locations for finding shark teeth. The water’s constant churning can uncover ancient fossils hidden within the sediment. Consider using a sifting tray or net for a more productive hunt.  If you can dredge some sand, silt and sediment from the middle of the Cape Fear River you could come up with a load of shark teeth, numerous bone fragments and maybe a whale bone. Don't forget about the Pamlico River, many Bull Sharks call this Brackish River home, so shark teeth can be found.

Types of Sharks Commonly Found Off the Shores of North Carolina  

The coastal waters of North Carolina are teeming with a fascinating variety of species of sharks, making it a haven for marine life enthusiasts. Among the most commonly spotted are the sleek and swift Blacktip Sharks, known for their striking fins that glide gracefully through the waves. Hammerhead Sharks, with their unmistakable flattened heads, also make appearances, turning the ocean into their playground. Keep an eye out for the Sandbar Sharks, a staple along the coast, and the docile Bonnethead Sharks, which are often mistaken for their larger hammerhead relatives. • Check the Tides: Hunt during low tide or right after high tide when the waves have deposited freshly uncovered shark teeth. This is absolutely the best time to find them.

• Visit the Beach after a storm: Rough Ocean water due to storms and especially hurricanes. These can bring these rare finds to the shores.

• Look in the Right Spots: Focus on areas where shells and other debris accumulate along the high-tide line. The Shell beds hide shark teeth easily. just start looking for triangular-shaped pieces. Sometimes it feels like you have to be at the right place at the right time to find them, but once you do, you will always find them easily.

• Bring a Sifter: Tools like mesh sifters, colanders or even small shovels are perfect for sorting through sand.

• Be Patient: Shark tooth hunting requires a good eye and some persistence. A lot of time can be given to the hunt. Take your time and enjoy the process!

Stay Safe While Hunting  

While hunting for shark teeth is a fun activity, safety always comes first.  

• Keep an Eye on the Tides: Be mindful of rising water levels to avoid getting stuck.

• Protect Your Feet: Wear water shoes or sandals to avoid cuts from sharp shells or rocks.
