Save us, from Vegas.... Hoover Dam

Updated: Aug 10

Get out of the city, quit gambling. Even though it is fun, you will lose it all like me on my trips to Vegas. Rent a car from Fox Rental Car, or anywhere you can get a good deal and explore the millions of places you can see that is an easy drive from Vegas.

Hoover Dam- 45 minutes to an hour drive from the strip. Easy interstate drive. a Scenic overlook on the way of lake mead, and a couple other spots close to the dam that give you pretty overlooks.

There is not entrance fee to enter Hoover Dam, and you can drive, or walk over the dam, but there is a security checkpoint you have to go through as you drive in. Some free parking is available also, but it tends to be a farther walk. But here is other parking that costs $10 bucks, that you should use if you are paying for a tour of the power plant. Complimentary parking is available for those who have difficulties. The tours are interesting, and you learn a lot. If you are claustrophobic, it could cause you some difficulties. Guided power plant tour is $30 and wheelchair accessible and tickets must be purchased at the visitor center, or $15 for the self guided tour that can be purchased on their website. Be sure though to walk or drive to the other side to the bridge, that way you can say you have been to Arizona.

While in the area look into...

*Hoover Dam boneyard

*The Dog who owned the Dam

*WWII bunker at Hoover Dam

*Mike O'Callaghan Memorial Bridge

*Boulder City Hoover Dam Museum

*Hoover Dam Lodge Trail Head

*Lake Mead National Recreation area

As you can tell with the pictures Lake Mead is a great place to check out while you are here. There are places to horseback ride, camp, swim, boat, kayak, and fish. Basically, anything you want to do, you can do here. Did you know Lake Mead feed Las Vegas its water? With the drought Lake Mead is lower than normal. The water levels are lower now than they used to be and continue to drop. You can see the past waterlines on the rocks. Lake Mead is fed by the Colorado river (comes through the Grand Canyon). Technically the city that's nearby Boulder City, so if you decide to make this a longer trip away from Las Vegas, don't worry there is a casino here too.
